What is FCL-X?
FCL-X is a water-based, PFAS-free lithium-ion fire extinguishing agent made specifically for lithium-ion battery fires. It’s designed to stop thermal runaway, reduce toxic gas release, and prevent reignition—something traditional agents like water or foam can’t do.
Tested by SafeLabs and certified to the Dutch NTA 8133 standard, FCL-X has been proven in multiple real-world EV fires and industrial training burns.
How It Works
Lithium-ion battery fires are complex and dangerous. They involve intense heat, toxic gas release, and the risk of reignition—even after the flames are out. FCL-X is designed to stop these fires at the source by addressing the unique chemical reactions happening inside the battery.
Here’s how it works:
Penetrates the Battery During Thermal Runaway
FCL-X soaks into the battery structure, reaching deep into cells that are undergoing thermal runaway. This direct contact helps interrupt the chain reaction before it spreads to other cells in the battery pack.Rapidly Cools the Fire and Lowers Surface Temperature
As a water-based agent, FCL-X cools the fire quickly, reducing the heat energy driving the reaction. Lower temperatures slow down chemical reactions, contain the spread, and give responders control.Neutralizes Harmful Chemicals Like Hydrogen Fluoride (HF)
Lithium-ion fires release toxic gases—including hydrogen fluoride, one of the most dangerous byproducts of battery fires. FCL-X chemically reacts with these gases to form non-hazardous salts, reducing the danger to people on scene.Buffers Lithium Oxidation and Suppresses Hydrogen Generation

How FCL-X Works
The main solvents present in battery electrolytes consist of alkyl carbonates, as well as lithium salts of phosphorus and fluorine. In the event of pressure relief, the flash point of the electrolyte is so low that the electrolyte vapor in the spray can ignite simply due to friction of the expanding gas through the explosion-proof relief valve. When heated, volatile toxic fluorine and phosphorus gases can be emitted from the electrolyte, along with carbon monoxide and methane.

Testing Validation
Protocol developed to replicate current industry standards for lithium-ion battery propagation testing as well as fire suppression certification testing outlined in UL 9540A 4th edition and UL 711 8th edition.
Three separate tests focused on different scenarios and environments to ensure reliability and versatility.
EV Battery Stack Fire Test
- 57 kWh prismatic battery
- Burning at ~800°C or ~1500°F with full thermal runaway
- Time to extinguish: ~15 mins
- Used ~120 gallons of solution
- No re-ignition of the fire occurred

E-Scooter Battery Fire Test
- 1 kWh 18650 NMC battery
- Burning at ~650°C or ~1200°F with full thermal runaway
- Time to extinguish: ~4 secs
- Used ~0.33 gallons of solution
- No re-ignition of the fire occurred

Small Cylindrical Battery
Stack Fire Test
- Nineteen 1865 cylindrical lithium-ion batteries
- Burning at ~540°C or ~1000°F with full thermal runaway
- Used ~.13 gallons of solution
- Time to extinguish: ~4 secs
- No re-ignition of the fire occurred
